Link information to visual cues. Often it's easier to remember a place or an image and its characteristics, than it is to recall a set of unfamiliar pieces of information. To memorize the information, you can try taking an item from the list and associating it in your mind with a picture or place that you know well.For example, let's say you need to memorize the presidents of the United States since World War II. You could associate each of the presidents with a place you know well, such as your front porch:
To reinforce this, you could draw a sketch of your porch, and note on it the location of each president. This technique is so powerful that you might find yourself thinking of the presidents the next time you go to your porch. If you are reading a chapter in your biology book, for example, you should start by skimming the whole chapter for an overview. Then create some questions to concentrate on while you study, such as "How does photosynthesis work?" Then read the chapter. After you've finished, reflect--think about how the chapter has answered your questions. Recite the answers back to yourself, explaining the information in your own words. Finally, go back through the book, skimming again for the main points. Sound like a lot of work? It may take longer than a quick skim, but it's also a great way to make sure you retain what you are reading, rather than just sitting in front of the book and turning pages. | ||||||||||||||||||||||
An Important Message About Rejuvenation Programs James Abernathy, PhD. The process of reducing the effects of age is what’s called Rejuvenation or Longevity science. In some medical circles it is called Functional Medicine. The reference to Rejuvenation is misleading. There are a lot of marketing campaigns and a wide array of clinical services or products that include themselves within the Rejuvenation domain. You may see this with various cosmetics, plastic surgery, and many other areas. The truest form of Rejuvenation comes from the effects of protecting cells from the effects of stress and free radicals. Effective Rejuvenation comes from a series of steps. Providing a steady stream of appropriate anti-oxidants optimizes the effects of exercise. Keeping the brain vital and charged is essential for avoiding disaster as we get older. Maintaining youthful hormone levels complete the ‘bio-physiological’ recipe for the most effective way to manage the effects of age. Cosmetic enhancement may be necessary for some patients and certainly play a strong role in ‘appearing’ to be more youthful. The combination of all these variables can be amazing. Addressing all the personal deficits and combinations of their effects is a critical process for an effective Rejuvenation program. To use anything less than all the services that complete the recipe, would lead to only measurable benefits and thus, leave something to be desired. Many patients tend to minimize the effects of therapies in all the critical areas, for one reason or another. Often it is because of their perceptions that some aspect of the program is not as important as another. Therefore, they will create priorities about which ones are most important and short-change themselves in the process. The most usual situation is to minimize the importance of supplementation because it can be expensive and doesn’t necessarily make a big difference on someone’s appearance. This is a critical mistake but sometimes a reality. It is important to know that all the critical areas of treatment are like a chain; each link is connected to another, which ultimately makes the chain what it is. Each link is important and to compromise anything in the chain would weaken it and change it. It is important to know that without the positive effects of the correct nutrition and supplementation, the rest of the patient’s objectives cannot be fulfilled at times. This is where the patient’s real motives are important. In most Rejuvenation and hormone therapy programs, the hormone part of the program is the most sacred to the patient. There is a lot of mystique and expectation about hormone replacement therapy. It is treated as the missing link. A patient may decide to sustain an average body or level of health, or pursue a superior physique and life experience. Especially for men, the excitement about the results associated with ‘steriods’ have never been higher. The mystique for using steroids is promoted by the mentality of society and the federal government at times. There appears to be an initiative to condemn the use of hormones for anything cosmetic and thus, the narrow-mindedness of the medical professionals and the government perpetuate a mystical sense about these medications. The reality about steroids is that they work and do greatly benefit the user. Most of the negative association about them appears speculative and a reflection of intolerance, not good medical science. The fact remains that there is little concrete conveyance of anything that proves the level of danger any steroid poses. So, meanwhile, there appears to be a disproportionate interest in testosterone and human growth hormone when in fact, the best Rejuvenation intervention requires a therapeutic dose of anti-oxidants. Instituting a strong Case for the use of proper nutrition and supplementation, will be worthwhile to the patient, in time. This should be cornerstone of responsible counseling and management of a medical program that supports hormone replacement therapy whether it is for women or men. Many patients don’t realize that anti-oxidants and various supplements are catalysts for hormones and can optimize the effects of hormones. In some cases, correct doses of certain hormone precursors or supplement catalysts can reduce the need for hormones. This is a good thing since it allows one’s body to use what it already has, more effectively. In hormone modulation, more hormones are not really a good thing. Healthy calibration of someone’s hormone levels is always the most responsible decision. In addition, the positive effects of supplements will greatly correct many subtle problems that may be brewing for a patient. The idea of Rejuvenation science is to prevent disease and enhance the quality of life. So, to manage one’s body in an expert fashion has inconceivable rewards. A good supplement program will come from a pharmacy grade manufacturer, not a cheap brand like you would find at GNC or on the Internet. If the product is sold to the public then it probably is not good enough. There are private lines sold to health practitioners for a few cents more per product. The difference is huge and can be proven through the tests performed by various agencies on the all the brands. Essentially, you get what you pay for, in supplementation. Claims that make consumers think they can scrimp though the process are irresponsible and faulty. The real deals are from health practitioners who discount their product base as a courtesy to their patients. Otherwise, in most instances you are not getting everything you expect from your selections. The evidence is vast and readily accessible. To get the right volume of products, a patient needs to expect to spend at least $80 a month. But like all positive things someone is pursuing in a longevity program, it is a worthy investment. And for those who absolutely cant afford a complete line of products, then a pharmacy grade multi-vitamin is essential. So as part of an effectively managing your age and health, combining the right therapies are critical. As a patient myself and having observed thousands of Rejuvenation patients, the proof is substantial: hormones, reduction of stress, appropriate diet & exercise, and pharmacy grade supplements are the critical elements for beating the odds of illness, degeneration, and premature loss of youth. Making an intelligent decision to honor all these points will bring the rewards that all of us seek as we get older. There are no short cuts but there are effective strategies.

This is a great time to establish new goals and guidelines for the New Year! 2007 was certainly a complicated year for all of us. The good news is that fresh starts give us incentive and motivation to strive for gains not acquired before. Here are some points for your consideration. It will help us focus on the goals ahead and making the best use of our resources.
Most of us stray from our initial focus to lose fat, build muscle, and stay focused. To help your inner picture of what you want to strive for, find a pic of someone you admire. It will help re-kindle your enthusiasm for getting back on your Rejuvenation diets. Sometimes we find it just too annoying to swallow that last batch of supp’s or get that last meal we are scheduled for. There is often a little voice that goes off in our heads that suggest maybe we don’t really need to do all this, anyway, or perhaps telling ourselves we can catch up tomorrow. Sound familiar? The fact is that our success for doing most anything is determined by the messages we accept in our minds. The way we talk to ourselves can shape the outcome of our lives. As a therapist, I tell clients to never trust their old feelings or persuasions while trying to build new habits. Supplementation is like medicine. Something we should not manipulate randomly. One piece of good news that might be gratifying is that new supplements which condense some of the essential nutrients we advocate, is becoming more accessible at a quality level of acceptability. So, if volume is becoming a chore, perhaps we can shrink that down for you.
Staying motivated in the gym requires constant re-invention of motives and passions. Personally speaking, I am in the gym 2-4 hours every day and watch people just grind away at their routines. Nothing is worse that trying to be excited in an environment that is dull. Your exercise activities should be rotated and tweaked for fresh content and challenge. Having a partner is a great idea for a little revitalization. While I don’t recommend that you have negative thoughts or patterns, I personally face this reality: if I don’t put my time in at the gym and have a good time, I am going to dread the outcome even more. About that time, I find a bodybuilding magazine that inspires me so I can get moving. One of the biggest hurdles to overcome are the effects of negative stress. It seems virtually impossible to deflect negative energy and events all the time. Short term coping skills will be helpful. Evaluate what your style of coping really is. Perhaps you need a new system for stopping bad thoughts and feelings while igniting more positive and energizing thoughts. Cognitive-behavioral psychology illustrates beautiful sweeping solutions that are worth mastering. The inner dialog you practice can successfully pull you out of a negative experience. Thinking rationally happens by replacing faulty, emotional thoughts with something that allows you to move-on, to something useful and more practical. We tend to ‘awfulize’ a situation and it allows us to spiral from one bad feeling to many others. This all or nothing thinking is driven by your unconscious mind and reflects years of old thinking patterns that have to be carved out of your mind a little at a time. People feel ‘sunken’ and become depressed. This is often followed with self debasing thoughts and ideas; the wrong direction! The trick is to stop yourself from lounging in negative and destructive thoughts and then patch-in an alternate attitude about the situation and your power to control how YOU feel. So, we stop making something feel terrible and awful, then move our thoughts into something more real. For instance: I can stand this, this situation is a pain in the butt but I can make around it right now. There are many thoughts you can use. Accept the fact that the world is an unfair and crazy place but you are competent and capable of managing YOUR feelings and behavior! Working the program is a lifestyle that is driven by solid information derived from our interaction and medical exams. Keeping up with your current status and health is as important as using the program to your advantage. Since we are ever-changing beings, it is important we proceed with proper reviews.
